Frozen Pipes Have You Out in the Cold?
When it gets to be that time of year when it’s below freezing outside at night, you should aim to prevent frozen pipes. When water inside the pipe freezes, it creates a blockage. This causes there to be excess pressure in the plumbing system and pipes in weak places can be compromised. It doesn’t matter if your pipes are made of steel, plastic, or copper, they can still be afflicted with even the smallest crack which can leak over 250 gallons of water per day.
There are some things you can do to prevent frozen pipes such as:
- Turn the heat in the house at least to 55 degrees
- Let the hot and cold water taps trickle throughout the night
- Insulate pipes that are on uninsulated outer walls, such as in crawl spaces or in the garage
- Use thermostat-controlled heat cables or heat tapes around exposed pipes
- Leave cabinet and storage area doors under sinks open at night to allow warm air circulation
If your water pressure is low and you suspect a frozen pipe, call our Indianapolis plumber. We’ll come out and diagnose the problem for you. We’ll take care of any necessary pipe replacement. You can count on us to be there when you need us most.
How Can I Tell If My House Needs Repiping?
Nothing lasts forever, including your home's plumbing. Over time, your pipes will begin to rust, corrode, and decay, leading to leaks and possible flooding if not replaced in a timely manner. But how do you know if you need to have your pipes replaced, or if you can get away with just fixing a small portion of your pipes?
Some of the most common signs it is time to repipe your home include:
- Your home is 50 years or older and has never been repiped
- Your water pressure is chronically low
- Your water has a red or brown color
- Your pipes leak frequently
Resolving Clogged Pipes
If there is a blockage in your plumbing system's pipes, it is most likely due to years of debris and sludge solidifying around the inside of your pipes. The last thing to go down the drain is rarely what causes the clog. Homes over 25 years old tend to be more prone to getting blockages, and they are also the ones at the most risk for damage when the blockage is being removed. The old pipes just can’t withstand injury caused by drain snakes which are commonly used by homeowners. As a matter of fact, a drain snake will only puncture a hole through the clog, allowing liquid to flow again, but it won’t remove it. Eventually, the clog reforms and the process is repeated.
In the 21st century there more advanced, efficient ways to remove a clog from a pipe. Power-rodding uses cutting blades that are sized to the interior of the pipe and are rotated by an electric motor. This tool uses the sharp blades to shred whatever sludge and debris that is in the pipe to small bits that can be washed through the pipe and into the septic system while cleaning the inside of the pipe at the same time.
